Background of the Study: Schizophrenia is a severe mental disorder characterized by symptoms such as delusions, hallucinations, and cognitive disturbances, often requiring long-term care and management. In Nigeria, including Kogi State, schizophrenia is underdiagnosed and poorly managed due to insufficient mental health resources, limited access to psychiatric care, and inadequate training of healthcare providers (Olayemi et al., 2023). Nurses are essential in the management of schizophrenia, providing medication administration, psychoeducation, patient monitoring, and support to families.
Despite the growing need for trained mental health professionals, there is evidence that nurses may lack adequate knowledge and training in managing schizophrenia (Sulaimon et al., 2024). As frontline healthcare providers, nurses are crucial in ensuring that patients with schizophrenia adhere to their treatment plans, understand the condition, and receive the necessary psychological and social support. However, the extent of nurses' knowledge and practice in managing schizophrenia, particularly in Kogi State, has not been thoroughly evaluated. This study aims to assess the level of knowledge and the practice of nurses in managing schizophrenia in Kogi State healthcare facilities.
Statement of the Problem: Despite the high burden of schizophrenia in Kogi State, nurses may not be sufficiently equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to manage patients effectively. This lack of specialized training can lead to inadequate care, mismanagement, and poor outcomes for patients. Therefore, it is essential to evaluate the level of knowledge and the practice of nurses in managing schizophrenia in Kogi State healthcare facilities to identify gaps and recommend improvements.
